Reformer Pilates

55 minute Reformer Classes are available for indivuduals, or can be shared between two or three attendees. Reformer Pilates classes are a full-body workout that uses a specialised machine called the Reformer to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and posture.

Our team of certified Reformer Instructors are dedicated to empowering you to become stronger and more confident in your body. Reformer Pilates combines the traditional principals and movements of mat Pilates with a Reformer machine. The Pilates reformer is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment which looks a bit like a bed with a sliding carriage, ropes, pulleys and springs of varying tension that can be adjusted to suit your fitness level or needs.

One couple that we teach have made it a special thing they do together, the come for their reformer session once a week and then go for a drink afterwards. After years of tag-teaming childcare, they now have teenage kids so can exercise together. The husband couldn’t touch his toes and now after 6 months his fingers are on the floor, he’s delighted and said he feels stretched, has a stronger core and no more back niggles.

About Reformer

The origins of the Pilates reformer date back to the original Pilates studio in New York in the 1920’s and was designed by Joseph Pilates himself to rehabilitate the ill in WW1 hospitals. Working in hospitals, Joseph explored the use of springs on the beds to apply resistance and progressive load to strengthen the body. Reformer Pilates was used to break down the flowing movements of the original mat work to strengthen an individual and get them to a level to which they can do the mat work effectively, but it has many more athletic and toning benefits than just this. Reformer Pilates can be used as a sport specific cross training tool and be used at any age as well as during pregnancy.

Far from just a workout for your core, this piece of equipment helps create internal pressure to elongate the spine, joints and muscles which then leads to greater flexibility, strength, stamina and a more balanced posture.

    • The variable resistance can be changed with each exercise according to the clients needs and ability.

    • The springs may be used to improve flexibility and increase muscle strength.

    • Proper alignment is emphasised when working within the fixed frame of the machine.

    • Muscle imbalances are identified and highlighted easily.

    • Core stability is further challenged when working to stabilise the torso against the resistance of the springs.

    • A tailored exercise programme can be designed around the clients wants and needs.

    • Enables those clients that can’t get up and down to a mat on the floor but can sit, stand or kneel using the reformer.

  • Reformer Pilates is suitable for both male and female of all fitness levels and age, including beginners. The Reformer can be adjusted to accommodate different levels of strength and flexibility. Our teachers will guide you through exercises and ensure you feel safe and supported.

  • If you have NO previous Pilates or Reformer Pilates experience, we suggest booking in for a private 1:1 lesson with one of our experienced teachers prior to joining an already established class. This is to ensure that you get the best out of your classes, understand the Pilates principals and are safe.

Joseph Pilates originally designed the Reformer using bed springs to add resistance to exercises. He believed that performing an exercise correctly a few times was more beneficial than repeatedly performing it poorly.

Clients will get much more out of their Reformer classes if they can commit to a weekly session to ensure that everyone in the class can progress at the same rate. Please be aware, for our reformer pilates classes we have a 7 day cancellation policy.

  • The Reformer is a bed-like machine with springs, ropes, and a sliding carriage that can be adjusted to increase or decrease resistance.

  • Many exercises are similar to traditional mat Pilates, but the Reformer's resistance can make them more challenging or assist to make an exercise more manageable.
